Jigsaw puzzles
By Craig Lawson August 21, 2026
A shelf of jigsaw puzzles caught my attention recently. Each box contained hundreds, sometimes a thousand, disconnected pieces. One piece by itself revealed almost nothing. It might show part of a flower, a corner of a building, or a small patch of sky. Put enough pieces together, however, and an entire picture appeared. A few aisles away, I found the true crime section. The two displays seemed unrelated, but together they offered a surprisingly useful lesson about document security. A single discarded page may appear harmless. An old invoice, customer list, medical form, employee record, tax document, or account statement may look like one insignificant piece. In the wrong hands, those pieces can begin forming a much larger picture. The Information We Stop Seeing Most private documents do not look dramatic. They sit in filing cabinets, desk drawers, storage boxes, and overflowing folders. Because employees and business owners see them every day, the information printed on them can begin to feel ordinary. A name here. An address there. An account number, signature, phone number, birth date, customer history, or internal note somewhere else. Individually, each detail may seem unimportant. Together, those details can tell a remarkably complete story about a person or a business. That is the danger. Confidential information does not need to arrive in one neat package to create risk. Like a jigsaw puzzle, it can be assembled piece by piece. A Trash Bag Is Not a Security Plan When a document is placed in an ordinary trash or recycling bin, it may be out of sight, but it has not been securely destroyed. The words, numbers, signatures, and identifying details are often still completely readable. The paperwork has left the desk, yet the information remains intact. This is especially important during an office cleanout, relocation, records purge, or end-of-year filing project. Large volumes of paper can make the fastest disposal option feel like the most practical one. But the more documents being discarded, the more pieces of the larger picture may be leaving the business at the same time. Secure paper shredding changes that outcome. Instead of merely moving confidential paper somewhere else, professional document destruction makes the information unreadable and unusable.
